


At Central Oregon Sports Academy, the approach is individualized, athlete-centered, and performance-driven. The focus is placed on addressing controllable factors that influence health, recovery, resilience, and athletic performance, while collaborating with trusted healthcare professionals whenever appropriate to provide comprehensive support.
Below are examples of athletes and clients in whom I played an active role in guiding, coordinating, and supporting both their intervention strategies and recovery process.
Athlete:
40-year-old female mountain biker
Incident:
Over-the-handlebars crash resulting in significant facial impact.
Presenting Injuries:
Concussion, torn lower labial frenulum, mobility and trauma to multiple front teeth, facial lacerations, and upper cervical dysfunction involving the C0–C2 region.
Intervention Strategy:
A coordinated recovery approach including light sports massage, gentle mobility and stretching protocols, nutritional support, and referrals to specialized healthcare providers including a NUCCA chiropractor for upper cervical care, a concussion specialist, and a periodontist.
Outcome:
Successful full recovery and return to activity.
Athlete:
27-year-old professional basketball player with the Los Angeles Lakers
Presenting Condition:
Chronic lumbar discomfort accompanied by severe sciatic pain, significantly limiting the athlete’s ability to train and compete.
Intervention Strategy:
A comprehensive Movement Pattern Analysis (MPA) was conducted and correlated with developmental history provided by the athlete’s mother, who reported that the athlete had bypassed the crawling phase and progressed directly to standing as an infant. During the assessment, the athlete demonstrated an inability to perform an efficient crawl pattern, suggesting a possible foundational contributor to the lower back dysfunction. Initial sessions focused on re-establishing proper crawling mechanics and neuromuscular coordination, followed by additional sessions addressing asymmetrical movement patterns and structural imbalances through self-managed myofascial stretching (MFS) and corrective movement strategies.
Outcome:
Successful full recovery with return to unrestricted training and professional competition.
Athlete:
77-year-old amateur golfer
Presenting Conditions:
Severe chronic lumbar pain with a history of L4–S1 spinal surgery, sacroiliac joint dysfunction limiting the ability to play golf without pain, Gleason 6 prostate cancer, reduced mobility, flexibility, and balance, sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and strength), constipation, and excess body weight.
Interventions & Recommendations:
A comprehensive program was implemented focusing on lower abdominal and intrinsic spinal muscle strengthening, full-body strength and balance training three times per week, and a daily at-home mobility and movement routine. A minimum daily walking goal of 30 minutes was also prescribed. Therapeutic interventions included soft tissue and movement-based strategies aimed at improving sacroiliac joint function and reducing lumbar scar tissue restrictions associated with epidural fibrosis following surgery.
Additional lifestyle and nutritional recommendations included dietary modifications, removal of identified food sensitivities, gut microbiome support, colon hydrotherapy, and a discussion with the client’s physician regarding testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) as part of an overall health and vitality strategy.*
*Current evidence does not strongly support prohibiting TRT in men with Gleason 6 prostate cancer, particularly in cases involving active surveillance or successful treatment, when appropriately monitored by qualified healthcare professionals.
Outcome:
Significant reduction in pain levels, with only occasional morning tightness reported on most days, successful return to playing golf, marked improvements in strength, muscle mass, mobility, flexibility, and balance, decreased episodes of constipation, and a 31-pound weight loss at the time of writing.
Athlete:
43-year-old ultra-endurance mountain biker
Presenting Conditions:
Chronic pelvic and lumbar pain contributing to postural dysfunction, including a functional scoliosis pattern and outward swinging of the right leg during gait, along with persistent right shoulder pain severe enough to prevent training and competition.
Intervention Strategy:
A focused therapeutic session was performed addressing sacroiliac joint dysfunction, targeted myofascial stretching with particular emphasis on the iliopsoas complex, and corrective treatment to the right wrist, which was identified as a primary contributing factor to the chronic shoulder dysfunction.
Outcome:
Successful full recovery with restoration of normal gait mechanics and postural alignment, allowing the athlete to return to full training and competitive mountain biking.
Athlete:
Female Olympic track and field athlete
Presenting Injury:
Right ankle sprain involving the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) sustained several weeks prior to the Olympic Games, placing competition participation in doubt. Consultation was requested by the athlete’s trainer regarding potential treatment strategies, with recommendations subsequently communicated to the athlete’s medical team.
Recommended Interventions:
Suggested interventions included direct therapeutic work to the injured ligament and associated structures including the fibula, ilium, and sacroiliac joint complex, along with sports massage targeting both deep and superficial posterior chain musculature and the shoulder girdle. Recommendations also included assessment and treatment, if indicated, of the cervical spine and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), in addition to ELDOA spinal decompression exercises and targeted myofascial stretching protocols to restore structural balance and optimize recovery.
Outcome:
Successful full recovery with return to Olympic competition, resulting in multiple gold medal performances.
Athlete:
38-year-old female
Presenting Symptoms:
Posterior mid-thoracic discomfort, restricted ability to take a full deep breath, generalized lower back tightness, and elevated stress levels.
Intervention Strategy:
Treatment included targeted myofascial stretching of the rectus femoris and iliopsoas musculature combined with guided diaphragmatic breathing techniques over a 15-minute session.
Outcome:
Significant emotional release followed by complete resolution of pain and improved breathing capacity.
Athlete:
67-year-old male
Presenting Conditions:
Chronic lumbar back pain, significant physical limitations relative to age — including inability to rise from the floor without assistance — and excess body weight at 285 pounds.
Intervention Strategy:
A comprehensive program was implemented incorporating progressive strength and cardiovascular training, mobility, flexibility, and balance work, therapeutic interventions, and nutritional modifications with a strong emphasis on substantially reducing alcohol consumption.
Outcome:
Noticeable improvements in overall physical conditioning, mobility, and strength, including the ability to independently rise from the floor without difficulty. Current body weight reduced to 256 pounds, reflecting a 31-pound weight loss, along with a significant improvement in overall wellbeing and quality of life.
